OUR STORY

If you’re after an early-evening flamboyant and fun feast, you’re looking in the right place.

Opening in 2004, Magoos owner Laurence has created a warm and friendly atmosphere within the medieval walls of 22 Hart Street, which dates back to 1410.

In early 2005

Nicola Sutherland, (Henley’s renowned mural artist), helped Laurence implement more of the quirky style he was working on to create the atmosphere at Magoos. It was Nicola’s cool interpretations that inspired the mural that can be seen in the garden today, showcasing Henley-on-Thames across the full length of the 180ft wall that runs from the back door to the newly developed Shisha garden.

If you arrive before 10pm

You will discover the beautiful garden at the rear of Magoos where you can enjoy the delights of the Middle East with our exotic flavoured Shisha made in the traditional Lebanese style.

Continuing this quirky style, local artist Nick Garnet created our signature totem pole surrounded by private, weather-accommodating, and heated booths.

Our garden is open from 5pm until 11pm, with last orders for Shisha at 10pm.

Looking back on the last 18 years…

“Throughout 2004-2012 Magoos became synonymous with live music, and believe it or not, even an unsigned Ed Sheeran passed through. During these years, Magoos operated from only the front section as you see it today, and with weekly packed-out live music nights Magoos also became synonymous with a tight squeeze! Before the extension (circa 2012) Magoos had no dance floor, any musician or customer had to make do with the small bit of space we had in the front bar to squeeze in.”

The Vault

In April 2012, The Vault was created as an extension to Magoos. This made for a venue more accommodating with the direction of our ambitions.

Experienced local contractors Dunne & Co. helped create a vaulted extension using inspiration from the Gothic medieval building at the front bar, for us to host live music acts and private event hire.

More recently, The Vault has become regarded as Henley’s only night club – although never the intention.

It’s essentially a late-night bar with great music, cocktails and good times!

Regardless there is clearly a need…

For people to dance and let their hair down in Henley. The Vault, with its warm atmosphere and ever improving sound system has been adopted as the venue.

Despite the late-night aspect

The Vault – with its 7 metres of glass doors that open out to a path leading to the beautifully-lit and styled private garden with a view of St Mary’s – is regularly hired out for many occasions, including: christenings, weddings, wakes, and, of course, birthdays!

More recently, our new Bottomless Pizza provides Henley with the Bottomless Brunch experience, Magoos style! With the best pizza in Henley-on-Thames served alongside 90 minutes of unlimited drinks from 5pm-8pm Thursday to Saturday provides even more entertainment and a great start to your night, or weekend!

Magoos opens daily from 5pm except on Mondays, when we rest from the weekend’s activities.

Sam Laverty, the Magoos Bar Manager, has been working with Laurence for the past 9 years and alongside other staff members, including Laurence’s children Hollie and Oscar, create a wonderfully warm welcome which Magoos has always been famous for, and this family-run business has now served Henley for almost two decades!

With more events and music constantly being booked, Magoos shows no signs of slowing down with more events and music and the endeavour to entertain the people of Henley continues…
